Metallurgy intern in action
Khanye Metallurgy intern, Tshegofatso Maelane
“I’ve always been fascinated by how minerals are processed,” says Khanye Colliery Metallurgy intern Tshegofatso Maelane. Tshegofatso holds a bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy from the Tshwane University of Technology, which she completed two years ago.
Originally from Bronkhorstspruit, where Khanye is situated, Tshegofatso describes the internship as a bridge, helping her to make the connection between theory and practice. “It is nicer to see the things you learnt about in real life, like thickeners and cyclones,” says Tshegofatso. Through the internship she has learnt about various equipment like filter presses and crushers. Tshegofatso mostly enjoys compiling daily reports with her mentor’s assistance.
Another highlight for Tshegofatso is working at the plant and seeing it run efficiently. Currently pursuing her Honours degree in Metallurgy, Tshegofatso is also still looking forward to exploring other minerals. “I also want to focus on minerals like gold and chrome. Hopefully, I will become a plant manager one day,” she says.
