Macren’s passion ignites his electrical engineering career
Gugulethu Electrical Engineering Foreman, Macren Nkuna
Growing up in a village that relied on generators before the arrival of electricity, Macren Nkuna quickly recognised how electricity transformed people’s lives for the better. This inspired him to pursue a career in electrical engineering. Born and raised in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, Macren’s fascination with electricity began at a young age, disassembling toys and experimenting with batteries to see what was inside.
Years later, a bursary from Eskom enabled him to study at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), where he earned both a diploma and later a BTech in Electrical Engineering. He also holds an electrical engineering trade certificate, and he has completed a maintenance management programme.
Macren has extensive experience, having previously worked as an electrical technician, engineering planner, and quality manager at various companies. “I hope to apply the skills that I have acquired to gain additional exposure and experience,” Macren says.
Now based in Witbank, Macren works as an electrical engineering foreman at Gugulethu, a role he began in January 2025. Specialising in electrical engineering, both heavy current and light current, his responsibilities include overseeing the continuous supply of power across the entire mine. “If we don’t have power, everything comes to a stop,” he explains. He is also responsible for keeping backup generators ready to support 24/7 operations.
