COO’S MESSAGE

Canyon Coal is committed to embedding responsible mining activities into the ethos of the company through health, safety and environmental considerations, social upliftment as well as sustainable practices.

As an organization, we are actively involved in the development and management of coal mines in South Africa and strive to be recognised as a renowned force in the South African mining industry. To that end, we are dedicated to forming business ventures with established and emerging mining companies to ultimately enhance economic activity in local communities and implement supporting initiatives towards national prosperity and economic growth. Furthermore, we have a very exciting development portfolio with projects at varying stages in the readiness cycle. The unlocking of these projects will significantly magnify the company’s stature.

Canyon Coal is proud to be able to contribute towards the transformation of the South African economy and society at large. To this extent, our communities are regarded as key stakeholders in the organisation and we actively engage with key role players to ultimately uplift our host communities.

Due to skills shortages in the mining industry, Canyon Coal together with statutory bodies such as the Mines Qualifications Authority, work together in addressing this skills gap by formulating comprehensive skills development strategies.

Additionally, Canyon Coal provides bursaries, learnerships and internships to ensure that the number of suitably qualified employees rise within the mining industry. All of our employees have the opportunity to become functionally literate and numerate. Career paths and career planning have been implemented to provide opportunities for employees to progress in their chosen careers.

Health and Safety is our top priority and we strictly enforce our zero-harm policy. We continually implement, maintain and upgrade our effective safety, health and environmental management systems as well as ensure employees' knowledge of all the risks associated with our mining activities.

Our environment is a precious commodity and one which we protect within our means. As such, we are committed to the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste and minimising final disposal and promoting the efficient use of natural resources.

Furthermore, we are committed to preventing and reducing all forms of pollution by employing effective technologies to control air emissions and the pollution of land and water.

In order to better reflect the heritage of the local regions in which they are located, we implemented a name change process for our upcoming project. We view these mining projects as valuable to both the company as well as our host communities. In appreciation of cultural diversity, we renamed our projects as follows; Sukuma (previously Springfield), Thuso (previously Witfontein), Ukwenama (previously Driefontein), Umzila (previously Birmingham) and Gila (previously Koppie)

My vision is to develop and grow Canyon Coal to its full potential for the benefit of all employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders.

Clifford Hallatt - Chief Operating Officer
