Canyon mines celebrate Global Recycling Day
Gugulethu and Khanye commemorated Global Recycling Day by hosting community recycling workshops and a clean-up campaign. Gugulethu hosted two recycling workshops for its Mooivlei Farm and Davel Community members. Environmental officer Ayanda Khumalo emphasised the importance of such workshops for knowledge sharing and providing support to informal waste collectors.
Representatives of the Msukaligwa Local Municipality and the Gert Sibande District Municipality participated in the workshops, along with several companies, including Hendrina Recycling, Petco, and Mlondi Trading Solutions. Ayanda highlighted the benefits of recycling, which include maintaining a clean environment and generating an income source for households. “What people may perceive as trash, we perceive as treasure,” she stated.
The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality partnered with Khanye for a community clean-up campaign at the Bronkhorstspruit taxi rank near a local river. "The clean-up was a success and was part of the City of Tshwane’s ongoing Rea Spana programme," explained Khanye’s environmental officer, Khomotso Mpahla. She mentioned the significance of maintaining a clean environment, focusing on sustainability and ecosystem preservation. "It is also essential for public health, reduces pollution, and protects our biodiversity, not forgetting that it enhances the overall quality of life,” says Khomotso.
