Khanye Full-time SHE Rep, Stella Mahlangu

Stella Mahlangu has been part of Khanye since 2018, steadily rising through different roles before becoming a full-time Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) representative in February 2024. Her journey with Khanye began when she worked as a safety administrator for a construction company contracted to the mine. She was later hired by the mine, where she worked as a plant and siding assistant. Working in various positions was essential for Stella’s career growth as it exposed her to different areas of the mine until fellow employees elected her as a full-time SHE rep.

“I am very passionate about safety, and everyone knows I do not compromise when it comes to safety, she affirms. As a SHE rep, Stella ensures everyone on site works safely and highlights the importance of teamwork. “Alone, I’ll never be able to pick up on everything. However, others see things that I may not see, and collectively we ensure that everything is covered from a health and safety point of view,” she says.

As a woman in mining, Stella is proud of the advancement of women, which she attributes to the initiatives implemented to elevate the underrepresented gender across the mine. These include considering women for senior roles and upskilling, among others. Building on her Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) certification, she intends to pursue further training in mine health and safety. Her goal is to become a safety officer.
