Pearl scores bursary opportunity
Gugulethu Dozer Operator, Pearl Mnisi
Another exciting avenue has opened for Pearl Mnisi, just over a year after she became a dozer operator at Gugulethu Colliery. Pearl, a beneficiary of the mine’s yellow machine training programme, which empowers local youth with skills, has also been awarded a Canyon Coal bursary.
Originally from De Wittekrans farm, where the mine is located, Pearl progressed from being a novice to one of 41 competent machine operators trained and hired by the mine in December 2023. Since her appointment, Pearl has gained experience and leadership skills. Last year, she was elected as a Safety, Health, and Environmental Representative by her colleagues. “It’s challenging, but I have confidence and focus. I believe that I am a born leader,” she says.
After spotting a bursary advertisement on the company website, Pearl decided to apply. She was then offered the bursary to pursue a health and safety certificate with the National Occupational Safety Association (NOSA). Her ultimate dream is to become a Chief Safety Officer.
