Mcebo grows fond of his trade
Diesel Mechanic, Mcebo Sangweni
When Mcebo Sangweni was first offered the chance to train as a diesel mechanic, he turned it down because he wanted to become a boilermaker or safety officer like his father. More than ten years later, he has built a career as a diesel mechanic, now working at Khanye Colliery. “I have no regrets. I’m so happy with what I’m doing now that I’ve forgotten about the other careers,” Mcebo remarks.
His duties at the mine include inspecting machinery, checking oil and water levels, and helping prevent equipment breakdowns. He completed his matric in 2013 and spent a few months sitting at home, while contemplating his next move.
When he was offered the opportunity to train as a diesel mechanic, Mcebo was hesitant but decided to give it a chance. In 2017, he completed the Diesel Mechanics and Motor Trade Theory courses NQF Level 1 through the Nkangala College. He also earned a letter of competence, which enabled him to take the trade test and ultimately become a qualified diesel mechanic.
He worked for various companies with mining sites in places like Vereeniging and Witbank. In January 2026, he secured a position at Khanye. Mcebo hopes to continue growing in the industry and plans to study mechanical engineering in the future.
