Khanye pushes ahead to meet production target
Khanye Colliery Mine Manager, Kgotso Mongalo
Khanye Colliery is intensifying efforts to meet its 2,4-million-tonnes annual production target after a challenging start to the year due to severe weather. Mine Manager Kgotso Mongalo says operations slowed at the beginning of the year, but a ramp-up plan is underway to boost production. The mine recorded around 360mm of rainfall over November and December, followed by more than 100mm in February. Despite these setbacks, Kgotso says the operations have started to pick up pace. “We are working ahead to cover lost ground,” he remarks.
The team began blasting activities in the North Pit, with coal from the area expected to sustain processing plant operations through May, June, and July. Kgotso says output from the South Pit is also expected to support ongoing recovery plans. Beyond production, the mine continues to prioritise safety and employee wellbeing, with health and safety performance improving compared to the previous year.
Employees are also benefiting from health and wellness initiatives, including the Maeko Social Work Services. “We are also proud that 21 individuals were promoted in the first three months of the year, which reflects our commitment to support career and skills development,” says Kgotso. Khanye is also advancing environmental rehabilitation projects, including backfilling and re-grassing more than 10 hectares of land.
