Canyon Coal’s internship programme became the stepping stone that catapulted Lebogang Mothoa and Nozipho Masina to become fully qualified engineers. Both joined the company over three years ago, before finally passing their Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) exams in 2025. Lebogang Mothoa, who completed her GCC in Electrical Engineering, says the achievement is a dream come true. “This is one of my biggest achievements, and it is not easy to pass the GCC on the first attempt. I am just grateful to God,” says Lebogang.
Lebogang appreciates her supervisor, Tshepho Mokwele, for the support and assistance she received in preparing for her exams. “At some point, I wanted to cancel my exams, but I was attending the extra classes that the company was offering us, which assisted a lot,” she says
Originally from Ekangala in Bronkhorstspruit, Lebogang studied Electrical Engineering at the Tshwane University of Technology. Nozipho, also from Bronkhorstspruit, hopes her journey inspires others. She holds a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology and recently completed her GCC in Mechanical Engineering. “Acquiring my GCC feels like a major achievement,” she says.
Nozipho joined Canyon Coal in 2022 as a mechanical engineering intern and was later appointed as an engineer at Gugulethu while the mine was under care and maintenance. Her daily responsibilities include planning and scheduling maintenance for the Engineering Department, analysing oil samples for machines, and performing administrative tasks.
