Junior Engineer looks to attain her GCC
Gugulethu Junior Engineer, Swazelihle Philile Mazibuko
Swazelihle Philile Mazibuko, a Junior Electrical Engineer at Gugulethu Colliery, is thriving in her first open-cast mining experience while pursuing her honours degree in Electrical Engineering through UNISA. “This is my first experience working at an open-cast mine, and I think it will be interesting,” Swazelihle says.
At Gugulethu, Swazelihle works under the guidance of the mine’s engineering manager, Ernest Mandere. She is based at the workshop and the Central Pit. Her duties include assisting with electrical compliance and safety standards, which are crucial to ensuring operational efficiency.
Swazelihle began her mining career at Zululand Anthracite Colliery (ZAC), where she completed a two-year internship working in underground operations. There she learnt about transformers, switchgears, lights, and ventilation systems. The hands-on experience laid a strong foundation and prepared her for her current role.
Swazelihle is also a GCC engineering candidate and is halfway through her programme with hopes of completing it by the end of 2026. Her goal is to grow within the industry and inspire more women to pursue engineering careers. “The environment here at Gugulethu is very supportive. I’m learning every day and building the career I have always dreamed of,” she says
