COO Message | Edition 018

Canyon Coal’s obligation to responsible mining extends into the communities around us. Soon, we will complete two community projects based in Delmas, near our Phalanndwa operations in Mpumalanga. While Phalanndwa may have reached its end of life in 2024, these projects form part of the mine’s legacy.

Grade R learners at Delpark Primary School will have an additional classroom to ease the burden of overcrowding at the school. Through Canyon Coal’s investment, community members in Argent have a platform to start a poultry farming business, which has the potential to create more job opportunities. By directing resources towards social upliftment initiatives, we hope to empower communities to become agents of economic transformation.

Meanwhile, geopolitics and inclement weather patterns outside of our control have created a tough operating environment. Despite these realities, our team at Khanye Colliery continues to show exceptional effort in making sure that we reach our targets and keep our commitments to customers. We live and operate in uncertain times, pushing us to be agile and innovative to weather the storms.  I believe that through preparation and sound decision-making, we can come out of it stronger.
