Mining Deeply Rooted in Raynard’s Heritage
Mechanical Engineering Foreman at Gugulethu, Raynard Carsten
Raynard Carsten joined Gugulethu in early 2025 as mechanical engineering foreman, bringing over 20 years of mining experience. Originally from Okiep, Springbok in Namaqualand, Raynard began his mining career immediately after matriculating. “I grew up in a mining town, so most of our parents, brothers and sisters were in the mining industry,” he explains.
Naturally, he followed in the footsteps of his older brother, who was also in the mining industry. “I started as a mechanical assistant and then became an apprentice. After that, I did my diesel mechanic trade and then became a foreman.” Today, he leads the mechanical engineering team at Gugulethu, ensuring the availability and efficiency of earth-moving machinery.
Previously employed at a zinc and lead mine in the Northern Cape, Raynard is no stranger to Mpumalanga, having worked there in 2014. Now residing in Hendrina, he is excited about his future at Canyon Coal. “It’s the teamwork from all departments that creates a conducive environment,” he concludes.
